The Biceps Muscle – Location, Function and How to Build It

When you think of a muscular person, a large biceps muscle is one of the most common images that comes to mind. Most body conscious people want a prominent biceps muscle. It reflects arm strength and fitness. Whether you want to look ripped in a shirt or just want to improve your upper body strength, a strong biceps muscles is essential for your upper body workout goals.

Where is the biceps?

The biceps brachii, commonly known as the biceps, is the large muscle located in the upper arm between the shoulder and the elbow. It sits on the front part of the upper arm and consists of two heads: the long head and the short head. Both heads originate at the shoulder blade (scapula) and converge to attach to the forearm bone (radius), allowing the biceps to play a key role in flexing the elbow and rotating the forearm (supination), such as when turning a doorknob or lifting a dumbbell.

What does the biceps do?

The biceps is primarily responsible for:

  • Elbow flexion – bending the arm at the elbow.
  • Forearm supination – turning the palm upward.
  • Assisting in shoulder stabilization and movement.

Exercises to Build Biceps Strength and Size

To strengthen and grow the biceps, a combination of resistance training exercises that target both heads of the muscle is essential. It is important to warm up before you begin your biceps workout, to help stretch the muscle, improve endurance and prevent injury. Here are some of the most effective workouts:

1. Barbell Curls

Barbell curls, also known as biceps bar curls, are a classic mass-building exercise that engages both heads of the biceps. Perform with a straight or EZ bar using a shoulder-width grip.

2. Dumbbell Bicep Curls

Dumbbells allow for a greater range of motion and independent arm work. Alternate arms or perform both simultaneously for symmetry and balance. Ensure that both arms are worked out equally to ensure symmetrical growth of the biceps.

3. Hammer Curls

This variation targets the brachialis, a muscle underneath the biceps, which helps add thickness to the upper arm.

4. Preacher Curls

Preacher curls isolate the biceps, reducing the involvement of the shoulders and maximizing tension throughout the curl.

5. Chin-Ups

Using an underhand grip, chin-ups are a compound bodyweight exercise that strongly activates the biceps along with the back muscles.

Training Tips for Biceps Growth

The biceps is a key muscle for upper arm movement and aesthetics. By incorporating a structured strength training routine that targets this muscle group and following good form and recovery practices, individuals can effectively enhance both the size and strength of their biceps.

  • Progressive overload: Gradually increase weight or reps over time.
  • Proper form: Avoid swinging or using momentum, which can reduce effectiveness and cause injury.
  • Recovery: Allow 48 hours between bicep sessions for optimal muscle repair and growth.
  • Nutrition: Adequate protein intake supports muscle development.
